Abderahim El Madani: The Inner Journey through Expressive Realism

Born on 23 November 1970 in Had Swalem, Abderahim El Madani is a self-taught Moroccan visual artist. His practice, begun in 1989, spans more than three decades of pictorial research. Living and working in Morocco, he has developed a visual language attentive to figures, traditions, architecture, landscapes and the country’s living heritage.

The Art of Expressive Realism

Far from nostalgic clichés, El Madani takes memories apart and reassembles them with poetic serenity. His style, which he defines as “expressive realism”, draws on the richness of traditional Moroccan life while firmly rejecting the chill of photographic hyperrealism. Through sustained research into stylisation, he favours a sensitive interpretation of reality. In his canvases, vivid colours and expressive forms allow abundant details to coexist with broad empty spaces, giving the narrative room to breathe.

The Philosophy of the Arch and the Threshold

At the heart of his work lies a powerful architectural metaphor: the arch. In his paintings, it exceeds its purely physical function to become a profound conceptual space. It is no longer a simple doorway, but a timeless opening between yesterday and today, between people and their environment. His figures never fully cross this threshold; they pause there, observe and listen to silence, turning built heritage into a resolutely contemporary question.
